Kramer, Anna {I770} (b. 16 Apr 1846, d. 3 Dec 1930)
Note: [Levi Tope.GED]

Anna Wagner corresponded with relatives in Germany until her death, butshe always wrote her letters in German, even to the relatives living inDayton, Ohio. We found a few letters she had saved, written after WorldWar I, and Mice Wagner had her brother-in-law translate them. They weredated from 1921 to 1928. Evidently, Anna regularly sent money to herrelatives in Germany- -two or three dollars at a time. In a letter datedFebruary 6, 1921, Anna's sister says cornmeal is 5-6 marks a pound. The sister asks if Anna could send a package for hersister-in-law--suggesting she send soap, sugar and lentils. The man whotranslated these letters said, "In these letters are some of the intensefeelings that many Germans had for the terrible times they were living inafter the First World War when the depression in Germany was at itsworst. It is almost pitiful at times, but their faith shines throughquite clearly."

On January 6, 1924, Anna received a letter from her nephew in Germanysaying her sister was quite ill. They were thanking Anna for the twodollars and said they used the money to buy coffee beans for her sister,as that was her very favorite thing to drink. On March 9 of the sameyear, this nephew or great nephew, not sure which, wrote again to saythank you for the three dollars, and to inform them that Anna's sisterhad died. She was six years older than Anna. This time they used thethree dollars to pay the doctor. On February 15, 1925 they received aletter, this time from John's nephew, Otto Wagner, saying John's brotherhad died of a sudden heart attack the day after Christmas, 1924. He wenton to say, "Because of the reversion of money in Germany, my parents, asall of us, lost all their money and had to begin all over again from thebeginning. As painful to us as is our father's death and as much as wemiss him, so we also are happy for him in his eternal rest, free from allsorrow and trouble."

Anna Wagner, had a special gift of healing. She could cure warts andcorns. She would put her hand over the warts and say something silently, and in a few days the wart or corn would be gone. She could stop bleedingand take the fire out of burns. She knew that masticated plantain wouldprevent a cut from being infected. This healing knowledge came from amale member of her family in the generation before her, and she in turnwas to pass this knowledge on to a male member of the family in thegeneration after her. And then he would pass it on to a female member ofthe next generation and so on. Unfortunately none of her sons wereinterested in learning her knowledge of healing, so it was lost. Perhapsthey equated it with "Old World" Germany and they wanted to be "NewWorld" Americans. She had this wonderful gift of healing, yet hergrandchildren just thought she was weird.

Anna Wagner died on December 3, 1930, at the age of 84 near LaOtto,Indiana, where the families were living at the time. Supposedly she wasin excellent health and gone to the woods to gather walnuts. It was arather cold and damp day, and perhaps she stayed out too long, but shecame down with a cold that went into bronchial pneumonia. She was sickfor about 11 days.
John Wagner died just seventeen days later, December20, 1930, at theage of 83. The attending physician says he treated John from December 1to the 19th. He died of lobar pneumonia.
