Family tradition has him as a sea going man, and then working in theshipyard of his wife's family. In this tradition, he is said to havesailed between London, Annapolis and New Orleans. Maryland records name aJohn KER and a John KERR as being the captain of the ship ELIZABETH. Aletter identifies a Mr. KER as owning land in Annapolis, Maryland. WithJohn. KEAR's (1) marriage license having been recorded in Annapolis,Maryland, and the name having been spelled KER, one might assume thefamilies are connected.
The KEAR family lived in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, until at least1806. The second daughter is listed as having been born in Pennsylvaniain 1809, but this may have been caused by the Mason-Dixon Line dispute. In the War of 1812, John enlisted as a Private in Captain William Holt’sCompany of Infantry, 8th Regiment of the Virginia Militia. The date ofhis enlistment is not known,, but he was discharged on 20 October 1814 atNorfolk, Virginia. His name appears on the Company Pay Roll and MusterRoll from 18 August 1814 to 24 October 1814.
The family moved to Ohio around 1817 where their youngest son was born.It is believed they were moving further west, but John (1) became ill inLicking County, Ohio, and died there.
Although John used the KEAR surname on his War of 1812 military record,he did not make the charge official until moving to Licking, County,Ohio. He told his children that the family ancestry could be traced toScotland and England by referring to this record. Unfortunately, a firein 1874 destroyed this record.
