Riddle, Joe Dan {I0016} (b. 19 Oct 1903, d. 19 Jan 1962)

Note: Joe Dan Riddle, Sr. was my grandfather and I remember him as a big man who had a hearty laugh and I am told by Layne Wright like all the other children of Duncan and Josie he liked to sing. I remember him taking me by the hand for walks into downtown Sanford to visit with friends or sometimes we might take a bus ride around town. A man who had won his own battle with the bottle he was always there for a fellow alcoholic in need of a friend. I am proud that the Dan (ny) part of my name comes from him.

Joe Dan and Lizzie are living with Ben and Genie on McIver Street in Sanford in 1930. Pappy is working as a Expressman for American Express Co.

Riddle, Mary Ann {I0019} (b. 9 May 1854, d. 17 Jun 1923)

Note: In the 1860 Moore County census Mary Ann Riddle is 6 years old and living with her guardian Alexander Kelly. She is listed has having a personal estate valued at $12,000. In 1863 her uncle John B. Kelly becomes her guardian and gets her estate from Alexander Kelly. Mary Ann marries John W. Elkins in 1872 and in 1879 they sue John B. Kelly for her estate and those who signed the bond in 1863 for $20,000 the amount of the bond. John B. Kelly claims there was very little left due to the fact the monies he received from Alexander Kelly were Confederate and the 18 slaves in her estate were freed after the Civil War. The Superior Court case goes on from 1879 until at least 1885 and I am still not sure if she got much from the estate that was left to her after the death of her mother.
I also do not know if she had contact with the Riddle side of her family. I know she was still in Moore County, NC according to the 1880 census.

Note: In the 1930 Lee county census Josephine is living on Austin Street in Sanford and owned her home with a value of $3500. Grace was living with her as were Gordon and wife Ethel.
