Note: James "Hamp" Riddle and his family left Moore County around 1846 traveling through South Carolina and on into Georgia where they stopped briefly before going on into Cherokee County, Alabama where they settled. In 1850 and 1860 census records of Cherokee County show he was a wagon-maker.
Family tradition says that Hamp Riddle was called to the door one morning in 1861 before daybreak and was shot to death by Union Troops or carpetbaggers. Nancy and her five children were listed 1870 census of Cherokee County. Shortly afterwards she moved with some of her children to Texas where she died in 1871.

Note: Wiley and Eliza Riddle lived on Crains Creek in Moore County, NC where they are listed in Greenwood Township. Wiley was a farmer.
The Questions and Answers column of the Daily Journal, Rockingham, NC vol. 32 no.105 has inquiry about a tombstone standing behind the Richmond County Maintenance Shop which reads:
Wiley Riddle
born May 20, 1825
died 21 Feb. 1897
" Behold ye stranger as you pass by
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so will you be
Prepare for death and follow me"
The question continued "Who was Wiley Riddle and what is the orgin of the verse?" The newspaper's answer was "we don't know who Riddle was and we don't know whether he's buried there or not. We do know the verse on Riddle's tombstone is quite old and has been spotted in old cemetries in this country and in Great Britain for at least the last 300 years."
