Note: Daniel L Riddle Corporal 46th Infantry Company H of the Confederate Army: Born in Moore county North Carolina where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Moore county at the age of 30 March 18,1862. mustered in as a Corporal. Present and accounted for until killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland September 17, 1862 while serving as flag bearer " Fell at the first fire "
In the 1850 Moore county census Daniel is listed as living in the house of his brother James Riddle who is a Wagon-maker. Daniel is listed as a farmer along with three others working on James land.
In February, 1852 Moore County, NC Court records show Daniel working on the road from Island Ford at the end of Kelly's Lane as a hand of Isabella Kelly the step-mother of Catherine Jane.
In 1860 Moore county census Daniel is listed as a "turpentine getter" with a personal estate valued at $250. Living in his house is wife Sarah, son Duncan, and a daughter Lucy who evidently dies young as she doesn't show-up in 1870 census.
There is another daughter born to Daniel and his first wife Catherine Jane Kelly named Mary Ann Riddle born in 1854 who is evidently raised by Alexander Kelly after the death of Catherine Jane Riddle on February 19, 1855.

Death: 17 Sep 1862 Sharpsburg, Maryland
Note: Catherine and her brother Daniel were living with Alexander Kelly according to the 1850 Moore County census. Alexander Kelly was the nephew of John B Kelly and must have taken up the task of raising them after the deaths of their parents.
Catherine died young and is buried along with her parents and brothers in a special location at the Union Presbyterian Church in Carthage, NC. The spot of the graves is under a large tree to the right front of the Church and are the only graves in this location. It is thought that John B Kelly gave the land for the Church and also the school. The inscription on Catherine's headstone reads:
Catherine Jane
Consort of Daniel L Riddle
Died February 19, 1855
Aged 16 years 10 months 7 days
There is a land where those were lost
Will be restored no more to die
No parting tears are ever shed
In that blest land beyond the sky
