When the 16 year olds were called to serve in the war James enlisted Dec. 23, 1863 in Co. D, Regiment 60. He was in Capt. Hoke's 61st Division and fought in the Battle of Fredricksburg, Va. and several other sites. He was captured and in prison in Elmira, New York for many months.
After the war James stayed with his mother for several years then went into the turpentine business in the lower counties of NC and from there he went to Georgia in 1876. Being devoted to his mother he returned often to see her.
James bought land in Screven County, Ga. and started a turpentine business and married Zera in 1881. In 1883 James went to Mongomery County, Ga. and was the first naval stores operator in that part of the state. He operated turpentine stills at Lothair, Tarrytown, Number Ten and Jefferson Place near Ailey. James also operated a mercantile business in Mt. Veron, Ga. and was the largest land owner in that county.
In 1906 a committee of citizens from Ailey and Mt. Veron met with representives of the Union Baptist Institute and agreed to to give 15 acres of land and $14,000. to aid in construction and equipment for the building of the school.
Capt. James Alvis Riddle's name headed the list of donors and the family has supported the college throughout the years and all the Riddle children and grand-children have graduated from this college.
Capt. James Riddle was a mason and contributed to his church generously. His obituary in The Montgomery Mointor states "he was a man of wonderful energy, gifted with that sunshiny disposition which made him a favorite with a host of friends".

Note: In "Aunt Alice's Story" by Alice Poe Brown she tells us that Glenn almost broke his mother's heart when he decided to leave home. Glenn Riddle picked up his suit case to leave and his mother took his arm and said "I'll go with you as far as I can". When they had walked a good ways Glenn stopped and said "Mother you must go back" and Flora threw her arms around his neck and said "I'll never see my boy any more" and it was true she never saw him again.
Glenn Riddle left his home in Moore County, NC about 1869. A story passed down by his descendents says Berlin Addison Robert of Lousiana once took his daughter, Lucy Francis with him on a visit to relatives in South Carolina. On the return trip they met a young man on his way to Texas where he intended to locate. Mr. Robert gave him such a glowing account of Lousiana and it's wonderful possibilities that the young man became quite interested and was invited to stop in Lousiana to see the country. This young man was Glenn C. Riddle, he was so pleased with what he saw that he spent a year with Mr. Robert on his plantation.
While staying on the Robert Plantation in Lousiana Glenn fell in love with Mr. Robert's daughter Lucy Francis Robert. After they married they located in Avoyelles Parrish where he held several public offices including that of Deputy Sheriff and Secretary of the Parrish. He was civic minded and always interested in public welfare.
