Note: William R. Taylor was a member of Co E, 54th Virginia Infantry, CSA. He enlisted on April 1, 1862 at Newborn, Pulaski County, Va and was due $50 bounty. He was present and accounted for on October 31, 1863 and December 31, 1863. Detailed as "brigade carpenter" by General Reynolds on January 10, 1864. In a book on the 54th Virginia " VA Regimental History Series" by Sherwood-Weaver shows him in Company F. William was listed as a farmer in 1880 census.
William was convicted of murder in October 1848 for the stabbing of Cornelius Bibb the overseer for John Pryde who William worked for in Montgomery County, Virginia. Williams defense was Bibb came at him in a threating manner and Bibb had provoked him while they argued over Bibb trying to make him feed and currie a horse after William's work day was done. Two men who were strangers that witnessed the fight but could not be found to testify had told people that Bibb rushed William with great fury and violence and in defiance of Williams warnings not to approach and attack him. William was sentenced to 5 years in the State Penitentiary in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia where he was listed as 26 and a carpenter in the 1850 census. A group of some 371 citizens signed a petition to the Govenor to pardon William Taylor but another group signed a petition to not grant it. The Govenor denied the pardon January 15, 1849.
