Riddle, James {I0291} (b. 1777, d. ?)
Note: James Jr. evidently became dis-obedient to his mother and was dis-owned by his father. The 1790 Moore County census shows James and Temperance with three sons under the age of sisteen. James Jr. left Moore County by 1797 and went to his relatives in Chatham County where he appears in their court records until 1808. In 1797 he worked on a road crew with his uncles Thomas Riddle and John Riddle and was appointed overseer on the "road from McQueen's Ferry on Deep River to the Moore County line". In 1798 he was re-appointed overseer and working under him was his cousin Brittain Riddle. In 1807 he was a witness to the will of his uncle Julius Riddle and in 1806 he witnessed two deeds one for George Lucas to William Riddle and the other from Edward Branch to William Riddle. Court minutes of 1808 show James as overseer of the road from Stinking Creek to Big Creek.
It appears that James Jr. stayed with his uncles Thomas and John Riddle when he first went to Chatham County. Later on he moved to or near Pittsboro where he was close to his other uncles William and Julius Riddle.
It is possible James Jr. married and moved out of North Carolina around 1808 since he was replaced as overseer of road he had been appointed to three months earlier. No records indicate in any way that he died around this time. To date there is no other information on James Jr.
